My Audi mechanic was recently working on rebuilding the engine of an almost-new Audi S5 V8 that one of his other customers bought. The car was a flood damaged Texas car with a poor running engine; basically, the engine must have hydrolocked, timing belt slipped, pistons banged into valves damaging the heads. Engine was rebuilt poorly, so he was redoing it and decided to replace the heads - and the engine is so new that used heads aren't readily available, so the only source was new parts. This turned into a $10K job.
On the other hand, my car was "totalled" primarily for the repair price of bumpers and doors. I bought it back from the insurance company, repaired it and have been driving it for the last 5+ years.
