I especially like the bit about "cars of opportunity." That is really what shopping for this type of car is - and it just so happens that Saabs are routinely in this category. ;)
I'll throw my two cents in: Take a hard look at the GM w-body cars - Century, Regal, Intrigue, GP, MC, and Impala. These are not exciting cars, but they are quite safe, quite reliable, and pretty cheap to maintain. Sticking with the 3800 gets you decent fuel economy for the size and output, and the 3800 is very durable. All of these cars are "of opportunity" - out of fashion and not desirable. Which means cheap! IMHO, these are fantastic budget cars, and granny-owned low-mileage examples abound!
