I always did my taxes myself until two years ago. Then I let a friend CPA do my taxes. Up until that point I was a big TurboTax guy. For me it just seemed worth it. Now, I've got a W2, 1099's from umpiring, 1099's from investment sales it just became easier to let someone else do it.
Big bonus for me, the tax preparers fees are deductible. One of the other mitigating factors is the same friend of mine pulled his taxes from the year before joining the firm and reran them and got an additional $500. To me that's worth it.
I paid $250 two years ago with a pretty simple return and $450 last year with all of the Schedule C changes that came into effect. YMMV.
In short, yes, I'll be going back to my CPA. You could always use an Enrolled Agent to do your taxes. They pass the same exams as the CPA, but don't before audits. I would imagine an Enrolled Agent is less costly and you can find them directly through the IRS. (That's my understanding at least.)
I hope this helps.
Gregg
