it seems to me that VWs and Audis are at least a bit unique in their oil consumption habits. Maybe I'm spoiled from owning mostly Saabs for the past 29 years, but except for drips, none of our six Saabs have needed much oil between changes, nor did the Exploder or the Volvo 940T wagon. My '86 GTI, on the other hand, needed oil about every thousand miles as I recall.
If 1,000 miles to a quart is "within spec," is there an advantage in the design? To my knowledge, Asian cars don't seem to do this. Is it a German thing? What are BMWs and Mercedes like for oil consumption?
Adding oil is not a big deal--assuming one is aware of it. BUt most cars these days don't use much oil between changes so how many people even think to check the oil level? I think of my buddy with the 2012 A3 that was down 2.5 quarts. He barely knows how to check the oil and doesn't know a wrench from a throttle body--probably a fairly typical car owner. His other car is a Murano and he never opens the hood. If an engine is designed to use oil this fact should be made clearer to owners so they know to keep an eye on oil levels. Just having one sentence about oil consumption on page 118 of the owners manual is not enough. Do VWs have low oil warning lights?
