...After being RIF'd in the 80's from MCI, I bought a 1965 36' Chris Craft double cabin in poor shape.

Spent two years restoring the boat [re-power twin 350, new 12v/120v, new water systems, A/C, new roofs, decks, enclosure, repaint, transom finish, etc}

I then lived on the boat for four years on the Chesapeake Bay, traveling very little due to finances and cost of fuel and a little bit of laziness. Ended up working in a rigging shop and having a ball, but did not get the wanderlust out my system.

The original plan was to go to the Bahamas and cruise and work renting jet skis I was going to stow on board to travel or tow in the local island travel. Never happened. The partner I had in the Bahamas where I used to stay backed out (needed a resident as part of a business then) so I had no business.

It's a neat idea, it really is. But you need to be way more prepared than you think. Especially if you think you are going to sail around the world, etc. It's way more expensive to travel that you would think and you need to be prepared for any emergency, mechanical or medical.

I have done deliveries of 40' sail to 120' power boats so I have spent some time on the water and been in some iffy situations. I still don't know everything there is to know and never will.

As others have said, take your time getting involved in boating. Learn to know weather and boat handling. See if you even LIKE it. Then put yourself on a 40' boat for several years in your mind with all the limitations mention by all posters and be realistic.

If it looks like a go, more power to you!
