I don't think the battery charger method will work. Most chargers will not actually put out any voltage unless there's a battery there to draw the current. Maybe if you had the ignition on, so there was a load, but even then I'm not sure it would work. A better method would be to connect the new battery via jumper cables to the battery cables, then after the old battery is disconnected, connect it via jumper cables until the new battery is installed; would be easiest with two sets of jumper cables, but could be done with just one as well. I'm still not convinced this whole idea isn't some imaginary conjuring of the Advance Auto guy, or whoever it was who said the car would go in lockout mode if you changed the battery.
