The large corporation I work for -- well, until 30 April! -- used to keep resumes on file for 12 months and then they were automatically deleted.
I haven't done any hiring for my department in the last 3.5 years but when I was hiring, external candidates were under the impression that the Recruiting or HR departments were sifting resumes on a regular basis when that is not the case.
Th only time I saw external resumes as the hiring manager was when I requested them from the recruiter, usually for a particularly difficult skill set to fill.
If I request them, the recruiter has to review each and every external resume posted against the position and there could be thousands. Everyone from Little Johnny in the 9th grade to Jugdish from Bangladesh can and will apply to jobs requiring MS degrees or security clearances. And if the recruiter looks at one he has to look at them all in order to not get in trouble with EEO.
That's why, whenever I created a requisition for a particular job, I'd insert a poison pill of sorts that would be related to a specific skill and if the external resume didn't have that particular skill area noted on it, the external candidate could be dispositioned as not having the required skill, etc.
Where am I going with all this verbage? You really need to use your network to get inside a company. Posting against jobs through a corporate website is like sending your resume into a black hole.
Good luck! I'll be looking for a job in about a month too!
