That's interesting about Hawaii. I've spent some time there and people do actively consider it a safe place compared to the mainland. The weather is very consistent and mild, and while you would think there would be risk from hurricanes (which is what they call them there, though I had always been taught Pacific = Typhoon too) due to the weather patterns they're extremely rare and almost always mild. Tsunamis are also very rare and almost always mild, and after the Indian Ocean tsunami there is a much greater awareness and preparedness for them (eg previous deaths were mostly of the why is the ocean retreating, let's go take a look at it variety). The active volcano is on the Big Island and while it's destroyed whole neighborhoods it's reach is limited population wise and most people don't live in its likely lava paths (though some do). I have been told there is a realistic chance it could take out all of Hilo, so there is that. I would guess that flash floods would be probably be the biggest 'natural disaster' type killer there, but it's just a guess. Overall, I'm not surprised about the safest state title and I think in all of our lifetimes and probably those of many generations to come it will live up to that, but it does seem like there is a possibility of something truly calamitous happening there that likely wouldn't on the mainland (eg a once in 10k year tsunami, or massive volcanic eruption which causes earthquakes and a tsunami).
