One thing I got a kick out of, was a formerly-Porsche-owner-turned-SUV-owner mostly blamed his loss of interest in driving with going from manual to automatic transmissions. I think it has more to do with lousy vehicle dynamics and uninspiring gearing/power train. Even if a Pilot or minivan was available with a stick, I really don't see how that would make the driving experience more enjoyable? Conversely, I don't feel the 9-5 requires a stick to be fun to drive. A stick is nice, but the automatic transmissions in Saabs are typically well geared for spirited driving. I think fun in car ownership is often more about vehicle dynamics and execution of the drive train than a specific feature set. I think that's probably why he liked Porsches to begin with - they go like stink and handle amazingly! The stick (a necessity in a real porsche) is just part of that experience, not the whole experience...
