It gets complex and there are lots of professional opinions out there. I've pretty much settled on the safe bet of sticking with the specifications of the compressor manufacturer.
From what is being said in the forum thread you reference it sounds like there should not be a problem if you have a some POE in with the PAG oil since both mix with the refrigerant. The advice given for flushing out the old oil if you expect to keep the car 10+ years, otherwise don't bother, sounds logical.
The PAO-68 sounds interesting and a lot of people swear by it. I've thought about it, but the consequences of a compressor self-destructing due to inadequate lubrication are severe enough that I just don't want to take the risk. (Not to mention in my case voiding the warranty on a new compressor.)
