First off, is there someone else at fault? (don't have to admitt fault to us).
If someone else, get it looked at and put in the claim so there is a claim against them just in case.
If you're at fault and its minor, might want to have your shop look at it to make sure nothing serious and how the costs compare to your deductable. If close or under, you may not want to make a claim and just handle yourself or live with it.
If needing to put in a claim, find out how your insurance company handles it, even if someone else at fault. Regardless if you work through your insurance company or someone elses, three main ways: you send in a certain number of quotes, they send out an adjuster, or they direct you to a list of shops they have agreements with (who will then likely take pictures and write up a report to send in to their adjuster to decide or perhaps just ok), etc.
If its an adjuster or if there is no shop you know/trust on their list, you may want have a shop you know/trust look at it first.
For any payouts to you, make sure they include all the costs that required to make you "whole". For a repair that would include taxes, diposal, shop fees, etc. If "totaled" all costs for buying a new to you car such as taxes, fees, registration, transfer taxes, etc. I know someone who claimed the mileage for the round trip of their ride to go pick up their car at the shop and to get the car home.
