Disclaimer - I own an Escort 8500 and it has worked well for me.
The flaw (for the police) with laser is the narrow line of sight that means the police must be aiming the device, meaning they are visible. Often your first warning that laser is in use is flashing brake lights for no reason way up ahead. The police like to use that shiny reflective front license plate as a target, so if you live in the South (where there's no front license plate) and have a darker colored car, remove the front plate holder and whatever it holds (they usually come from the dealer with an advertising plate, and owners typically replace it with some kind of cute or political statement.
The worst part of using radar detectors is false alarms. I swear the Ohio Highway Patrol has placed dumb K-band transmitters all along the interstates that click on then off, triggering the "instant on" radar warning, training you to ignore your radar detector (except that the OHP uses Ka band detectors when they're not using laser).
Escort has some newer (and expensive) units that are GPS integrated and have a data base of red-light and fixed speed measuring camera locations. I think it can also create a data base of stationary non-police devices and ignore them, like X-band door openers and perhaps even those pesky OHP transmitters. There are models that double as GPS navigators, and Valentine has an option that ties its display in with smart phones.
