A good friend/biz colleague had two of these, a wagon and a sedan. When the sedan finally needed a ton of work (at about 300K) he dumped it and bought another used one. Then he had two bog slow diesels, both wagons. But they were very decent long distance cruisers and durable as could be. He finally dumped both somewhere north of 340K each and got a gas engined 300E.
It was fun to ride in the diesels when we went skiing, but I was always amazed at how slow they were. Great cars. But that kind of durability is gone for good.
Side note. He still had the 300E when we took my 9K to NYC on a biz trip. He was amazed that I could put either regular or premium in the thing, as he had to run premium in the Merc. Then he drove the 9K and started calling it "the sports car." Which says a lot about his Merc. And that was before I'd done the suspension or staged the ECU. :-)
