Perhaps you meant that the 5-spd auto loses time (well, actually gains time, but we know what you mean) in a 0-60 sprint vs the 4-spd auto, because it needs an additional shift? I hope you weren't saying that the 5-spd auto gets "lost" when it shifts, it certainly does not do that.
I attempted to calculate the shift points of the two transmissions. Scott includes specifications on this board for the 2000 4-spd, including the final drive ratio[http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/models/2000/ts95.html]. Unfortunately, his similar info for the 5-spd lacks final drive ratio [http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/models/2002/pr13.html]. From another SAAB website, I found a 2.44 final drive ratio.
Plugging these into a Gear Ratio Speed Calculator I found on the web, with 5,500 rpm shift point, the 5-spd would shift into third at 58 mph.
So, if all these values I used are "good", the 4-spd might be quicker 0-60, but I would expect the 5-spd to be quicker 0-55+.
