I've got to chime in as a Miele fan. Yes, the vacuum is heavier than most out on the market, partly because the motor is more robust than most. They're half way (weight wise) between most plastic vacuums and a Kirby that's still cast metal.
The Miele has a 7 year motor warranty, and if you listen as it turns on, the motor ramps up slowly - it's controlled by the same motor controller technology as variable speed air conditioners. Saves wear and tear on the motor, should last well.
I've had mine for over a year, and love the durable functionality of the unit. Cost was comparable to a Dyson. We have a ranch home, so lugging up and down stairs isn't a consideration for us, but wasn't a big deal at the last house to me or the Mrs.
And we also prefer bags, in my opinion they seem to catch dirt better, and we've got allergies in our house. When I've used bagless, I always end up with some dirt 'escaping' when opening/closing the canister to the body.
