I also live in an urban area. Our garage opens onto the alley, and a wider opening allows easier in/out while making a 90 degree turn. I did not want to allocate several feet of our back yard for a driveway at the entrance, so I opted instead to push the garage back as far as I could, but used a wider door. As is, the "other driver" has already scraped the side of their car several times on the opening when trying to pull in without making a three point turn to line the car up.
Agreed that two separate doors looks nicer, but presents issues getting in/out from the alley. I live in an historic district and the planning commission originally wanted me to use two doors until I argued my way out of this - there are several other garages in our alley with one large door.
