I'm responsible for our riding mower at work. After 13 years of maintaining three mowers here's my take.
1. The Kohler is a commercial grade engine which is a step up from the B&S.
2. I change the oil & filter every 40 hours.
3. Get a run meter. They are cheap & easy to install.
4. Clean your air filter with compressed air.
5. Change fuel filter about every 500 hours, same with spark plug.
6. After 1000 hours, I buy a new mower.
Basically, keep your oil & air filter clean everything else is optional.
Maintaining the mower deck is what takes your time, as they take a beating.
The subject mowers are Craftsman with 42" cuts.
