My worst TSA experience was a long time ago, shortly after 9/11, when I was doing some sales engineering work for a security firm. We'd checked all the heavy gear, but I'd carelessly left a bunch of tools in my carry on. I got flagged at the scanner and they went through my bag with a fine-tooth comb.
The agent pulled out two screwdrivers a Philips and a slotted - and set them aside, "You can't take tools on the plane." She opened a blow-molded case with my multi-bit set that was fully stocked with various security bits - all the tools needed to work on our products. She took a close look, and then put it right back in the bag.
I know I should have said nothing, but I blurted out, "Wait, you're telling me I can take a Philips screwdriver on a plane, but I am allowed to take tools for all the fasteners that planes are actually assembled with onboard???" That was a dumb move - I could easily replace the screwdrivers wherever I was going, but the security set would be both difficult and impossible.
"Sir, all screwdrivers are prohibited, but none of this stuff - " and she motioned to the case " - is. I *almost* pulled the case out and showed her how to build a screwdriver that could take apart airplane seats, but I didn't - because I needed them to do my job. :(
That was a long time ago... these days, they've confiscated my Swiss Army flash drive twice as it does have a small knife. They've never said a word about my Utilikey. FAIL.
