Well, these days I don't think there's much novelty or anything with doing business by email or over the Web. A dealer like that may as well stick to putting ads in the Sunday paper (good luck with that...), if he's so indifferent to email inquiries.
Bought my 2001 9-5 Aero in 2004 as a CPO. Found on Saab's CPO listings, sent email inquiry asking for CarFax and Iris reports, got both from a small GM/Saab dealer in a day. Ended up buying it.
We bought a beautiful 9-5 wagon on eBay in 2005, having only looked at photos online and spoken to the dealer briefly. It was a very small operation: 2 guys who knew what they were doing, buying off-lease vehicles at auction, taking advantage of remaining warranty to fix anything broken, and then reselling at a decent profit. Transaction was Missouri to New York.
We needed another wagon in 2009 or so, after that first one got totalled by a drunk. Found this one on the Web in Boston at a large dealer, made the deal over email and the phone, done.
I always feel that when a retailer shows little interest in my potential business, it's usually a sign of his lax attitude toward doing business in general, and I stay away.
Just my .02
