I am replacing a [gas] heater for some elderly friends, not leaking but about 30 years old.
The pressure-temperature relief valves are heavy copper alloy and the discharge pipes have traditionally been 3/4" copper pipe, around 5 feet long. These two items conduct a lot of heat out of the tank and should be insulated [but many are not insulated]. You can now purchase the discharge pipes made mostly from plastic. That eliminates most of the problem. So I got two, one to replace on my own water heater. Between the two, I will have around 10" of 3/4" copper pipe for other projects.
