None of the small cars do that well in terms of safety vs larger vehicles. Crash tests only show part of the story - real world data still shows most of them doing quite poorly, the Mini being the one anomaly. Golf/GTI does fairly well also. In all sizes, the luxury and near-luxury makes still do better in the real world. What is interesting is that luxury models from Asian manufacturers don't seem to do as well for injury as Audis or Volvos or whatnot... in spite of what everyone says, there seems to still be a difference between euro and domestic/asian.
And certainly when it comes to rust - holy smokes, neighbours got a Kia Rio as a second commuter... new... last year... hood is rotting away already. Never seen rust so bad on a 1 year old car. Worse than our 25 year old c900 winter beater! Saw an elantra the other day (probably circa 2006 model)... you could see through the fender on both sides right through to the engine comparment... rockers also! unbelievable... gaping holes everywhere... should not have been on the road...
