Yeah, you can use the full retail version to upgrade. It just costs more than the dedicated upgrade version is all.
FWIW, *in general* older machines will run 8 better than 7. 8 is a really lean OS - it's a fantastic piece of engineering. You do need at least 2gb of RAM to run 8, though... I don't even think it will install with 1. But 2 will run it surprisingly well. 200gb is fine - 8 takes about about 10-20% the space of 7. The gotchas will be hardware driver support (broadly not much of an issue) and video. You really want decent video run 8 well, although it'll be fine without. Don't sweat the touchscreen - there are neat things you can do with the touchscreen, but it's hardly a necessity - especially on a laptop (IMHO).
