I just put RE970AS on our 9-5 and love them in the rain and dry, but I would not consider taking them in snow even though they are "blocky and aggressive"... I consider them a summer tire. No sipes anywhere. You need sipes for ice and slippery stuff. You need good clearing for in snow (which RE970AS might kind of do, but there will be almost no ice or packed snow/slush grip). I think the wet grip in at highway speeds is better than the Michelin Pilot Super Sports that preceded them (and those were pretty darn good - they'd go well on a 911!). That might change on a track at super high speeds (and different compromises), but for normal use, they really clear water nicely!
My impression from folks here is that the Nokian all weather tires work very well year round, though I would watch the tread depth because once that decreases, they will not be as good in snow. Summer driving will wear down the depth without any need for snow performance... so my approach is to run dedicated summers and snows, but I live much further north with much more snow and cold temps. The WR series tires should be a great choice in Rhode Island, and from what I hear, they don't wear that fast in summer.
