I know you love plasma TVs (a lot), but that article is nearly two years old. TVs have changed a lot in that two years, especially in the "gimmick technology" of local dimming. A modern, multizone local dimming TV is *very* good. As a guy who installs 10-15 mid to high-end TVs a year, I see a lot of them. If you are basing your opinion on two year old cutting edge technology, you've missed a lot.
As for resolution, there is a significant flaw in your argument: Not all content is a recorded movie. Some content might be a computer screen, a menu, a video game, or CGI. If you can't tell the difference between 2k and 4k content on a < 60" TV, maybe you just haven't tested the right content. The real world may not be distinguishable 2k vs 4k, but artificial worlds very much are.
Furthermore, as TV prices come down, the average size increases. More and more homes include bonafide home theaters designed to accommodate very large TVs. I just installed an 84" Sony XBR in a reasonably-sized new home and it *still* looked lost on the wall. We could have done a 100+" projector just fine (but they're a pain). Even my ancient 1950's house accommodates a 60" TV readily. In a few years, a 60" TV will be on the small side of normal anyway, and people are going to want those extra pixels then even if they don't now.
Finally, I'm not sure where you read that Panasonic admits anything but the superiority of the AX900. I'd be very interested the see that. Everything I've read from Panasonic on this TV suggests they think it's every bit as good as their best plasmas, ever.
