The scissor jacks that came with c900's and 9000's actually work really well for what they are intended to do: change a tire at the side of the road. If you use it properly and the car is not damaged/rusted, they fit very securely into the chassis and crank very nicely. You're never under the car changing a tire, so worst thing if it fails is the car falls on a rotor. Not great, but worse things could happen.
That Audi jack design looks atrocious! One of the worst I've seen, and I can't imagine thinking that plastic parts would be a *good* thing! Maybe that was sarcasm in the earlier post? I dunno, but it looks downright dangerous!
The newer jack in the 9-5 looks relatively beefy for a scissor jack, but it does not connect to the car as well or crank as well (at least mine) as the old SAAB scissor jacks. Also I need to carry a pipe in the car to put over the super short emergency wheel wrench. What the heck were they thinking? There is no way my wife could change a wheel at the side of the road with the 9-5 setup but she could on the c900.
Hydraulic jacks are much more convenient, but are probably at least equally as likely to fail as that old SAAB scissor jack. Like you say, jack stands are essential! I am looking forward to getting a lift for our garage in the future for real work. A hydraulic jack is ok, but neither here nor there imho - still a pain/dangerous to lift a car and too heavy to leave in the trunk.
