I just replaced a battery in the 9-5 with a new Interstate. That battery costs around $200 (about what I paid to diy it). If I take it to my indy to do that, I'd pay a labour charge as well. Sure it wouldn't be $362+tax, but it would likely be within $100 of that if I wasn't having him do other stuff. Fair enough - it costs them time and bay space, and if we can afford that luxury, why not?
Otoh, I do agree that *having* to marry the battery to the car is a real pain in the neck. What happens if your battery dies in a remote location (that may have automotive batteries, but not BMW service)? Presumably there is some work around?
