DirecTV HR44 died

The hard drive failed. If you get DTV to replace, you might get a HR34 :(
And you get another DVR with a hard drive [probably used] that is optimized in their favor, not yours. You are paying them for a warranty on a DVR they own or paying for a repair exchange. Better to have a quality external HDD that you own and can easily replace if needed.
I got a quiet fan cooled eSATA external chassis and installed a WD "purple" 3TB Sata drive [major cost hit for 4TB]. The "purple" HDD line is optimized for streaming and camera AV use. The firmware is different. I know from a business client in the corporate video security segment that HDD's in this type of service do have longevity issues and that WD AV drives are the most reliable.
When the DVR boots up with a working or dead internal HDD, an external drive takes over, the internal is ignored. When it sees a drive that is not formatted for its use, it does that in less than a minute. So you can increase capacity easily.
All of your favorite channel selections, scheduled recordings and recorded programs are gone and you are starting from scratch. The DVR comes up fine, registration is not lost.
I have a HR44 that I purchased new [but its theirs if I ever stop using it].
