I'm with Snowmobile on this. Have done my own homework on cars for years.
Unless you only go to a dealer for service (usually a bad idea) any good indy can give you the lowdown on what's good and what's not about makes and models they work on. The specialist shops are even better.
The techs at different shops also know one another and hear about problems different makes and models have. So if (for example) you hear that a given make and model has a certain issue it's something you can avoid or check on.
And almost anyone can do some web research and find out the issues of most makes and models. Places like Saabnet often have more knowledge--some of it anecdotal--than even good indy shops, so one can get a pretty good sense of what to look for or check on. I know from experience that people here have run up against stuff my Saab indy of 20+ years experience hasn't seen. We simply have more miles and exposure to issues than he sees in a small town in New Hampshire.
CR has nice data for a few years of ownership but it is often too generic. They lump problems that occur into groups, such as "electrical" or "engine" but don't provide the detail. I know that's because their research methodology doesn't allow for the detail, but it makes their data less useful. For example, a problem on a Saab with the infamous orange headlight relay is easily identified and remedied, but would count in CR as an electrical problem. A defective DI cassette would (probably) be an engine problem. That makes their input merely directional, but basically useless.
Also, remember who is responding to CR surveys. Respondents to market research interject biases, as do the questionnaires themselves. I know a little about this: I spent 13 years of my career doing market research, 3 of those years running an automotive customer satisfaction program. IMHO, people who respond to CR surveys tend to be predisposed to answering product surveys and may be hyper-critical of issues with any device. And they are not necessarily good judges of differentiating between a minor issue and a major problem. They provide some OK data, but it should be balanced with other research.
