I'm 64 and got a steel hip at 57. It's been fantastic. At this point I don't even think about it. You want a surgeon who does lots of hips, not the occasional one, and who uses a modern, minimally invasive technique. Mine was the anterolateral approach. If you hear about the old fashioned "limitations'" like don't cross your legs, head in the other direction fast.
I had surgery a Tuesday morning, was up on a walker that afternoon, went home the next day, worked a few hours on Friday. I used a walker a few days, then a cane a few days, then no assistive device. I was driving a stick (left hip was replaced) in about 10 days. 10 months after surgery I rode my bicycle up Mt. Washington in NH (7.6 miles @ 12%, generally considered one of the world's most difficult bicycle climbs). Haven't looked back, only limitation the surgeon gave was don't run long distances (because of the impact). But I don't want to do that anyway. I describe it as the best joint in my body.
The rehab is very important so don't slough off on that. It is a wonderful procedure, good luck!
