I'm guessing if you fly 40-50K miles a year then you're mostly booking on airlines you have status on... which depending on the airline and when they changed their rules can make a big difference.
The airlines are trying to keep listed ticketed prices down and make up on it on the back end... luggage fees, seat selection, access to early boarding, printed ticket, etc.
They claim it makes pricing more transparent as only paying for what you want... but mostly feels like you're being nickeled and dimed to death and can't accurately compare prices. One rule of price acceptance is it's almost always better to reduce a price that to add on to it. However most customers are picking based on the listed "lower" price, and not the all in price. Knowing that, carriers don't want to have a higher than needed listed price. Heck, they are counting on price obfuscation to work out for them more often than not.
My company has changed some of its travel policies because of the airline policy changes around allowable checked luggage expenses and on the road laundry expenses.
