End of the day sounds like you got screwed by a bad manager. Especially if your work was so bad why did they bring you internal. Not unusual for PIPs to be nothing more than a CYA move on an already made decision.
Listen to your lawyers advice. Might want to ask them if you should mention to the employer that you seeked legal council as part of negotiating tactics to get what you want, (perhaps use the fact you are Canadian and not familiar with US laws / practices as cover).
The most important thing is to get your "story" straight about why you left for interviews as not to stumble if/when asked. Perhaps use the original managers name as the "reference" and perhaps even a linked in recommendation (but as others have reference many companies have strick policies). If you go back to Canada its an easy "story", and if you go back to contract work may give an opportunity to find something / get a good "win" under your belt more quickly.
