Long time Apple user (20+ years) and I have almost always bought Apple refurb products. Never had a single problem. Typing this on a refurn iMac.
It's worth noting that many refurb items were returned for minor issues like cosmetic defects, and not catastrophic failure. Even if the return was b/c of a major defect, the refurb process and subsequent quality checks means you should be fine. I never worked out the mathematical model for it but I always considered that a refurb might even be -less- likely to fail than a new product. The notion that a product could be a "lemon" and perpetually be prone to failure I believe is mostly a myth. I'm sure someone here will chime in.
Only caveat: I've never owned a time capsule!
