OT: Some days it doesn't pay to get up....... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sat, 22 Aug 2015 17:46:31 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
First thing this morning my wife tells me the water heater is not working right. She had to shower with the cold water valve completely off and the water still didn't warm up. I checked the Water Heater and it is working, main burner is lit. I take my shower with 100% Hot and 0% Cold, and the water temp is right at the lower limit of my acceptable range. Her acceptable range is much warmer than mine.
OK, must be a bad temperature controller on our 17 year old water heater. I check model numbers, serial numbers, search the internet on my work laptop, and finally find the A.O. Smith web site identifying the P/N of the control valve/thermostat I need. Search for the P/N to no avail until I find another web site that lists the new P/N that has superseded the old. Search for the new P/N and luckily find that Repair Clinic, only 8 miles away, has one in stock.
Fire up the desktop PC so I can print out the order confirmation, only to discover the monitor has died. It will illuminate for 3 seconds, then "pop" and turn off for three seconds, then repeat. Try to connect the printer to our laptop and no dice. Thirty minutes of downloading drivers, re-booting, and the laptop still doesn't know it has a printer connected.
Great! Now I need a water heater control valve AND a new computer monitor. I order the valve, skip the hard copy of the sales order, and go monitor shopping during the mandatory 1 hour wait period while my internet order for the control valve/thermostat is being pulled from the shelves.
I get home with the valve/thermostat but no monitor. The two stores I checked out didn't have a model in stock close to the size I was looking for.
Now the son is awake so I can't start the water heater project until after he showers. While waiting for this my wife discovers the lights aren't working in the small bathroom. Nor are the basement stair lights working, or the garage lights and receptacle, or the large bath receptacles, but all other circuits are fine.
OK, the GFCI has tripped. Reset it and it trips again before my finger is free from the breaker. Now what!? We are having the house re-sided but the contractor (yes, on a Saturday) has none of his tools plugged in. He installed the siding ring surrounding the patio receptacle yesterday, but the receptacle worked after that. What's up?
I remove the weatherproof cover plate from the patio receptacle and the entire receptacle face falls out of the box and lands on the pavers! Well, it is 30+ years old and I helped the neighbor replace their failed patio receptacle over 20 years ago so it must just be age.
Luckily I had a new receptacle in my electrical drawer so 10 minutes later all circuits in the house had power once again.
By 2:00pm the water heater control valve/thermostat had been replaced and the water heater is once again working properly.
By 4:00 pm I had a new monitor connected, still larger than what I was hoping to buy but smaller than the others I found and less expensive too.
I don't know if I should look forward to tomorrow or dread what it may bring. Still have to de-bug our laptop my wife uses to FaceBook, and I should enable wireless printing for future ease.
