I think it depends... Trade in at a dealer is kind of different than selling it to someone. You have absolutely no legal connection to the guy - you dumped it for another car... so I understand how one would find being contacted creepy, but otoh, any service history you could provide could really help the new owner out - would be kind of a nice thing to do.
Unfortunately dealers want to completely hide the service history to hide any issues, though in some cases (ie to knoweldgeable buyers) knowing what was done, makes the car more valuable not less... eg for a 9-5 - no records, I have to budget for a serp belt and all pulleys, as well as a bunch of other regular fail type items (DIC, CPS, fuel pump, etc)... so if these were done recently it sure helps!
The dealers now try to remove all data from cars "in the name of privacy"... but of the 3 I most recently bought, I still found info... One, during my look over pre-sale, I found the bill of sale from when he bought the car 6 months prior for substantially less than the dealer paid him for the car! That was a good bargaining chip ;-)... fortunately the car had been serviced at the dealer and they were able to pull up some service history (serp belt, and other things - the PO clearly took good care of his car). Was a no brainer purchase.
So basically if someone contacted me, I get the creeped out thing, but so long as they were reasonable, I wouldn't mind being helpful. Would be nice if there was a non-creepy way for buyers to obtain history on a trade in.
I've never actually contacted any PO's (actually the owner of one of my cars name was the same as a notable political figure).
