Wow....AR3 and AR3a speakers......the capacitors were the size of a nuclear reactor.
In 1970 a set of AR3s were sent to the repair station from Woody Creek Colorado .... Hunter Thompson had plugged them into the wall and melted the coils in the bass drivers. But, that happened more than you can imagine. I believe the new ones came with brown cord that appeared to be just like power cords for lamps, and people would put a plug connector for AC on the wire, and plug in the speaker to a 110V wall socket. Good lord the 60 cycle hum sound must have been heard for miles. Until the coil melted and fused to the bracket / frame.....
If you found a set of AR3 or 3as, more than likely all the drives would be shot, and it would cost of bundle to get them back to sounding good.
I still have the 5 cubic foot bass reflex cabinets I built in 8th grade wood shop with Altec speakers -- together laid down, they are the size of a casket. I should get those moved somewhere, and I'd have room for another Saab !!!! RAPTURE !!!!
