Yes. That is exactly what I was thinking! I've occasionally seen a used lotus for sale... or for those into electrics, the old Tesla roadster is based on lotus. U2BC has one (see photo and link), and seemed to love it. Maybe he will chime in.
All this makes me think some manufacturer with a sports car lineage (like Porsche) could do a throwback/stripped driver's edition... a very basic 911 might still cost a fortune and not sell like hotcakes, but it might add to the credibility to the brand (not that Porsche needs credibility, but brand building is a continuous process). I was really impressed at the level of compatibility of the early 911 to the modern 911. Lots of things just bolt right up!
Actually, speaking of Porsche, Cayman/Boxster might be an option for someone looking for this type of car, though they are hardly cheap, they are kind of "the poor man's porsche" and offer a ton of value and fun!
