In aerospace, specialization is required among the more experienced people on your staff in many instances. You wouldn't want someone doing computational fluid dynamics analyses if they're an advanced materials or electromagnetics engineer.
Broad engineering skills derived from a rigorous college curriculum along with some technical experience through work or internships were always in demand among the new college hires. I tended to notice that the kids today are incredibly bright and can handle the tasks assigned to them and more if properly led by subject matter experts. They were motivated by assigning difficult tasks to them. Those that were assigned repetitive engineering tasks tended not to do well mostly, I believe, because they felt underutilized and disrespected.
I always loved the kids that came fresh out of school. Eager to learn, I would try to get them some real world knowledge of aircraft by assigning them for a period of time to one of our aircraft that was being torn down and rebuilt during a heavy maintenance check. None of them ever came back and said that was a waste of time before we turned them loose as a designer or structural analyst. And I bet each of them knew what an aircraft bulkhead was!
