thanks for all the responses.
mlc, because of the temp of the rooms and the drafts, we think that insulation wasn't put in properly. there are bad drafts in a few rooms. Kitchen with a 15' slanted ceiling - has cold air flowing from the lower cabinets.
MBedroom, also has a high slanted ceiling. On the other side of one wall in that bedroom is the garage. That wall is 15-16' high, temp was measured with a hand held machine (sorry have no clue to what it's called), temp on the bottom 9' was good, above registered 20 or 30 degrees less.
In that same room there are a set of 3 windows next to one another, that entire wall is very cold, drafty, the window manufacturer fixed some of the draft but not all. On another wall that is connected to our neighbors home, we live in an end unit townhouse, felt drafts coming for the electrical outlet.
A company that does cellulose and other insulation is coming by today. They will hopefully give us the right recommendations.
Spoke with another company that does the same work, asked them about the rebates from the state of NJ. He recommended an 'Energy Audit', which takes from 2-4 hours which they charge $249., this cost would be rebated if you choose them to do the work. This test includes many things, the ones I remember are Blower Door Test, Check Oven, Billing Data review, InfraRed temp test plus (taken from http://www.njcleanenergy.com/residential/programs/home-performance-energy-star/what-expect-home-energy-assessment)
Health and safety check (carbon monoxide levels, moisture, and indoor air quality problems)
Overall comfort level (cold/hot spots, indoor air quality stuffiness/stale odors)
Air sealing opportunities
Insulation levels
Heating system efficiency
Cooling system/central air conditioning efficiency, if applicable
Domestic hot water system efficiency
We're always looking for ways to save money and IF we could save on energy costs plus stay warm - that would be great.
Thanks again for all the responses, I'll let you know what transpires.
