Our pool was installed in 1987 when our boys were only 5 and 6 years old. They got great joy from the pool for 8 to 10 years. High school years saw significantly less use, college years saw none. In 2004 we were faced with a decision; either upgrade the pool with a new liner and new decking, or remove it.
My wife wanted to remove it whereas I wanted to keep it. Even if I don't swim in it much anymore I find the presence of a water feature in the backyard very relaxing. The cost to remove the pool was slightly higher than the cost of refurbishing it. I argued that it was foolish to spend more money to actually decrease the value of our home. She relented.
Now it is 12 years later, I am 12 years older, and the pool is 100% mine. When the kids were young my wife put her College Chemistry Major to good use maintaining the water quality for the kids and their friends to swim. In addition, last summer was the first season in our 28 years of pool ownership when we had zero peace from neighborhood kids ringing the door bell incessantly asking "Can we swim?" Sometimes every 20 minutes, after being told 'Not Tonight, we have other plans"!
They chase me down the street on their bikes when I return home from work in the afternoon, smash their bikes into my car before I can even open the door, to scream at me through the window glass "Can we swim?"
Where are their parents? And why didn't they teach their evil spawn any manners? Most of these kids can't even swim - a whole 'nother worry!
We may not open the pool at all this year but I need to run the filter to keep the water somewhat clear so mosquitos don't over populate the neighborhood.
20/20 hindsight. I should have followed my wife's wishes 12 years ago and had the pool removed. Sigh..........
