Time was, you wanted to build something, it had to be a physical thing. You had to get some stuff, some tools, a place to put it (ideally a bench in the corner of the basement), and put it together and see if it worked. Or take it apart and try to see how it worked (which was the fate of more than one of my dad's model train engines -- all those linkages!).
Today it's just clickety-click and you can create things in the computer that are interesting (I love puzzles) but ephemeral. Loose the hard drive and they're gone.
A couple of weeks back I made some space on an unused desk, got out my tools, and fixed (if spraying with wd-40 is fixing) a fan we picked up off the street (people do that around here -- leave stuff out for free). It felt good -- I guess thinking back to fixing stuff with my dad, so many years ago. Still, the pull of all the puzzles computers provide is strong.
