The following is a memory of what I read and some details are likely to be flawed, but:
A fellow in the US was restoring a Bentley or Rolls Royce from around 1920. He need a specific brass head light bracket and none could be found.
He located an identical bracket in Australia which was not for sale but had been removed from its car which was also being restored.
The Aussie owner knew of a local person with a 3D scanner, so he took his bracket to be scanned.
The computer file was then sent to a fourth person, this guy in central Europe I believe, who used his 3D printer to make the part in plastic.
The plastic part was then shipped to the US where a Craft Foundry local to the original person replicated the part in wax, then used this wax piece as the sacrificial mold to cast a new perfectly fitting brass headlight bracket.
