I'm doubtful that the central system is spreading viruses, but I suppose that it's possible. You would need a portable air cleaner with a HEPA filter. If you're looking at them, then probably simply look at CFM and filter size. Noise would also be a criteria, but maybe that's not a big concern, unless it creates problems with their hearing aides.
Perhaps a better aid for them would be humidifier during the winter to help keep throat and nasal passages from drying, but if those have standing water then they present their own risks.
