OT: Kentucky Derby - another event spoiled forever Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sun, 5 May 2019 05:44:17 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I am not a horse race aficionado, and during my College years the Derby was only a legendary drunken weekend each year that I was able to avoid but regaled in the stories. My wife had an Uncle who lived on Long Island, was an Equine Veterinarian, and for decades he always had at least one patient participating in the race. Sadly, Uncle Bernard passed away last week.
My opinion:
- Yes, there was a foul.
- No, the foul didn't change the position of the top finishing horses by the time the pack recovered and crossed the finish line, and disqualifying the lead horse was unconscionable.
- It is not clear to me who or what caused the foul; the initial winner, the horse coming up on the inside that may have spooked the leading horse slightly outside, the horse coming up on the outside which was positioned far too close to the pack leader and can be seen in photos as colliding with the horse eventually declared the winner (a 65:1 bet who had never won any race!), or a track which was so muddy the entire race should have been cancelled for the safety of the horses and their riders.
Oh well. I will now have an extra two hours on the first weekend of May each year for the rest of my life. I should have washed my dirty SAABs yesterday as that would have been time better spent.
