Multiple different Ferries on different Great Lakes Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Mon, 6 May 2019 16:28:31 In Reply to: Can't get there from here?, Sondeen [Profile/Gallery] , Mon, 6 May 2019 13:35:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
There are two Ferries which cross Lake Superior to Isle Royal, one privately run and one run by the National Park Service.
There may also be ferries which service Isle Royale from Minnesota, but that is such a relatively short jaunt that there may be no commercial viability in that service.
What I need to do is to spend a few days at a Historical Village Museum in Wisconsin near Manitowoc. There is a 4-hour crossing between Manitowoc, WI and Ludington, MI on a large Ferry.
There is also a faster 2-1/2 hour crossing on a high-speed Catamaran Ferry between Milwaukee, WI and Muskegon, MI. Faster, more expensive, and lands me South of my goal.
Either ferry will allow me to avoid driving around the Southern tip of Lake Michigan and through Chicago traffic. Ludington is further North than Muskegon but I also will avoid Milwaukee traffic by landing in Manitowoc near the Historical Village Museum.
I mentioned the privately run Isle Royal ferry, formerly nick-named the Barf Barge, only because its travel time from Copper Harbor to Isle Royale is approximately the same as the travel time of the ferry running across Lake Michigan between Ludington and Manitowoc. Some people get sea-sick on large open water when in a rolling ship.
