The bimetal disk in the thermostat got "stuck" in the open position, so I had to manually pop it back. But that part got replaced with a new one when I replaced the heating element (part of the kit).
I'm hoping cleaning the thermistor solves the fuse-blowing issue. Besides removing the clump of lint covering it, I also gave it a wipe-down with isopropyl alcohol. When my daughter was living here she liked using dryer sheets and I thought they might've left some kind of residue?
I can definitely believe they'd try to undersell the competition. And yes, some of the design definitely feels like they didn't spend enough time thinking about serviceability! One of the local repair guys has told me he's had lots of trouble with Samsung dryers. :-(
