I have acquired a stash of mixed brands of motor oil that has been sitting unopened on the shelf for at least 40 if not 50 years. Back when it was packaged in quart cans, and the fiberboard cans with the metal tops & bottoms. Brands like Quaker State, CAM2 (Sunoco) Wolfs Head, Sears ..etc. I have been using it in an Impreza with 140K that doesn't burn or leave puddles but somehow goes through a quart about every 400 miles. I'm guessing rear shaft seal? Brief research says oil is only good for about 5 yrs, by manufacturers recommendations. I sense no changes in the car and it has had dozens of quarts dumped in so far. Weights vary as well, ive been mixing them to even it out, sometimes with new 5w30 if the canned stuff looks too viscous. Oil change over the weekend and one of the CAM2s was gelled a bit. Color was consistent, just partially gelled, it went in anyway. Pretty bad right? Will it melt back into oil with the heat? Will it clog the pickup screen or block oil galleys? We will see.
