I've only used my scope for checking the fuel pump on our 9-5s. Its simple, you get a current clamp, clip it over a power wire to the pump, and look at the trace. It should look like a rectified some wave (kind of). If there are non sinusoidal drop outs, the pump motor is wearing out. The clamp I use I got off Amazon for maybe $20. PDI ca60 and I use the 1mV/10mA setting. A battery powered handheld scope would be useful on the road. My Tektronix is a small digital scope, but it plugs into a wall...
I don't really have any books on this though.
