Assuming the alternator is working properly, what's wrong with charging by driving? The alternator can put out upwards of 100A. Most plug-in chargers are going to top out around 10-30A. I know there's other loads on the alternator, but it's certainly going to be able to deliver way more than 30A to the battery if it requires it. If driving the car wasn't sufficient to keep the battery charged up, how are all the cars on the road even running? Most drivers NEVER charge any other way, and even those of us who have plug in battery chargers are relying on the alternator to charge the battery most of the time. I'd guess conservatively that upwards of 99.999% of all car battery charging is being done by driving.
