I think it was the issues with Spyker that fully put off SAAB from allowing the use of the name. Probably just as well given the weak business situation since.
In terms of EVs, like turbos, SAAB was simply too far ahead of the game again for the marketplace. The plug in through the road hybrid turbo convertible would have been huge over the last 5+ years, especially if used across other body types. But they showed it off 10 years earlier (with the plug in aspect muffled by GM), they never were able to bring it to market, and the market probably was not ready for it then anyway. It is easy to forget that SAAB already had a solid ev development program going on in their last few years, with special attention being paid to battery management, cold weather issues, etc. Tesla was still in it's infancy at that point. With proper management at gm, Saab could have been a heavy hitter today.
I don't have a bias against ev but we still haven't bought one. I haven't found something that we like as much, meets our needs for long distance travel, and especially with the cost of cars these days, we are trying to get as much life as we can put of the Saabs we have already. The closest I can see to working for us is the Volvo system in the xc60/90, with a small battery, just enough to commute, and in many respects, comparable to the system SAAB put in that demo convertible in 2006 or thereabouts...
