Although I like the styling of the Jetta, it is VERY small and looks VERY small. Visually, it compares well with a Ford Focus (and it does, in lower trim levels). You need to be looking at an Audi A4 1.8 Turbo (it has 170 hp this year) to compare with the Saab. I sold my '97 900 SE Turbo for a '00 A4 2.8Quattro, and I truly miss the fun, interaction and communication that the Saab provided. The Audi is more refined, bt it's less fun. If you like the Jetta so much, get the Turbo version, with the 150 HP and save some money. You will wind up with a very satisfactory small car, well build and good looking, and well equiped. But drive both (not just around town, drive both hard!) and you will see, there is no comparison. I have the sports package on my Audi, and it does stick better to the road than my '97 900 SE did, but it doesn't provide any feedback through the wheel and you can't sense body motions as well as in the Saab. So for winding roads, the Saab is actually more fun. Communication and feel are what saabs are about, and that, you must pay for. You also get great seats, eye opening power and quality construction, not to mention a bit of excentricity, great economy and safety.
Like I said, if you really like the Jetta, go with the 150 hp 1.8 turbo. The VR6 makes the volks look very pricey for such a small car with little pedigree. Take a look at the A4 if you want a better comparison for the saab, and if you're a VW man, you might like it better. I don't. I miss my '97 900 SE-Turbo more than I though I would, and I knew I would! At least I have a Saab left (i had two!), a '96 9000 Aero. Nice car, but a bit big, and I really hate the automatic (wife won't drive a manual)
Enjoy whichever you choose!
Rick
